Equisetites are the most enduring ground vegetation that ever existed. During Carboniferous, some of them became tall and large like trees: the Calamites. Calamites faced hard times in the Permian, but they managed to resist in Gondwana where they evolved into the giant Neocalamites. With the advent of Jurassic flora Neocalamites disappeared, but smaller equisetites survived. Today only the smallest survive, the so-called ôhorsetailsö. Equisetites were a vital food source for dinosaurs, because even when eaten they could keep growing from the underground.
