Notes:The Passion Flower is a genus that encompasses many widely different species, from herbaceous plants, to creeping/climbing shrubs, to small trees. Most of the species are of Tropical origin and nature, and therefore can not be planted outdoors in temperate regions. There are a few species, however, that are rustic and can tolerate the cold of winter, if not extreme. The name of Passion Flower was given by the Jesuit missionaries in 1610, because of the resemblance they seemed to find between parts or the flower and the religious symbols of the Passion of Christ. The plant has sedative properties, which were already known to the Aztecs.
