Notes:Gardenias were named by Linnaeus after Dr. Alexander Garden, a Scottish-born American naturalist. They are evergreen shrubs, sometimes growing as small trees, which thrive in warm and humid climates, and in bright environments, but not under direct sunlight. They are prized for the beautiful and strongly scented flowers. They are difficult to grow in temperate regions because they require a climate that is similar to their native Tropical environment. In Japan and China the Gardenia jasminoides species is cultivated for production of a yellow die that is used for clothes and food. Gardenia is the national flower of Pakistan.
