Notes:Also known as Eastern Cape Cycad, or Bread Tree Cycad, this species belongsto the Encephalartos genus, whose name, of Greek origin, means “bread in thehead”. This refers to the Hottentots’ practice of burying the pith for two monthsbefore baking it as bread. The burial destroys the toxins in the pith. It is a longlivedspecies, but like the whole genus, it is classified as endangered.
