On the 20th of March, Insurgent, sequel to the 2014 blockbuster Divergent premiered in the cinemas worldwide. A couple of months before the release, Lionsgate, the movie studio behind the series came up with a truly unique and groundbreaking idea for promoting their new production – They decided to team up with Samsung to create INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY, the very first promotional, movie-related Virtual Reality experience. The 4-minute VR experience was created specifically for Samsung GEAR, Samsung’s VR headset available for Galaxy Note 4, and it features Academy Award winner Kate Winslet, Mekhi Phifer and Miles Teller.  If you enter the VR of SHATTER REALITY, you can become a Divergent captured by Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Winslet), and you have to undergo a series of mental simulations.

D&D Creations worked with Kite & Lightning and Lionsgate to create the visuals for this VR experience, using XfrogPlants for all trees, plants and other greenery.

Last December, we got the great opportunity to partner up up with the L.A.-based nr. 1 VR experience creator studio Kite & Lightning to work together on the visuals of INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY. As our first contribution to a VR experience, we had the chance to make use of the newest features of our toolset, successfully and seamlessly integrating our 3D environments into this action-packed simulation. For this project, our Studio delivered a high-resolution 360-degree HDRi spherical panoramic render of an entire virtual outdoor environment and a high-resolution HDRi skydome.

We laid the foundation of the virtual environment by building an entire 3D landscape and a complex atmosphere for the skydome in e-on software’s VUE. Both the environment and the skydome was rendered in Multilayer 32bit OpenEXR 2.0 output format, enabling K&L and the movie’s VFX team to integrate them into Unreal Engine 4, adding extra close-up elements, using Image-Based Lighting provided by the data in our render outputs, and offering flexibility in the final compositing. The VR experience was built using stereoscopic 4K video of the actors, with the 3D environment and effects composited and rendered into an “immersive 3D/360-degree experience”.
